When I was in school I had a great track coach. What was great about him was the way he inspired us to run. We would be running repeat timed 440 sprints on the track, and by the 8th or 9th repeat, I was sucking air as fast as possible, feeling exhausted, and thinking I really can’t do another one, and there is no way I can make it to twelve.
And then he would tell a real quick story, or a joke, or sometimes he would just make a comment, and then get us up to the line and blow that whistle…and my exhaustion would completely disappear like it was my first lap.
Great Leaders understand it’s about what inspires their team, it’s not about them.
