Heroes are plain, ordinary men and women. The very fact of calling them heroes inspires ideas of someone larger than life, when in fact, they are more accurately characterized by their ordinariness. There is nothing special about them, they are not more intelligent, they do not posses special powers, and they have not been given anything the rest of us don’t have. The only difference between someone acting heroic and anyone else is, that person made a choice.
They made a choice to use some part of their life to stand for something bigger than themselves, bigger than their own concerns, bigger than what they want to do, or feel like doing. They made a choice, and they declared it publicly.
No one can make it for you. Taking a stand for a result that does not yet exist may take some courage. There isn’t any evidence that your actions will be successful. You may risk not looking good if you fail, and you may be standing alone with no agreement. However, it’s something that can be done by anyone, anywhere, anytime.
Whether it’s related to Sales, Production, or Finance, there is no shortage of opportunity to stand for a larger more desirable result. If you can’t see any opportunities, you’re not paying attention. Heroic stand taking and the resulting actions are a serious interruption to the “Business as Usual” predictable routines of day to day work life.
If we want to have a more powerful result, we need a breakthrough. Breakthroughs are created by such heroes, by people who will stand for the result while it is only an idea–people who will act to make that possibility a reality.
