Commitment Management is another way of saying a commitment structure, meaning a structure that allows you to manage work before the deadline, rather than after it’s too late to do anything about it. As a leader and manager in your company, you need every advantage you can get. Asking key staff to make commitments for the work that they must get done this week gives you a management tool that accomplishes several things at once.
• It promotes each person planning ahead, working the plan, committing to next actions – (marketing being the usual top priority)
• It allows you the option of managing actions from the plan before the fact, while you still have time to intervene, if needed
• It gives you the ability to read and coach each person’s intentions, conviction, focus, etc., as you hear what actions they commit too
• It offers each person the option of taking responsibility for their own production before the fact, while they still have the opportunity make adjustments
Commitment Management is a way of working smarter, not harder. Break your annual plan down into weekly actions. Look for the two or three things each key person must do for everything to be successful this week, and stay on track with the annual goals, and have a great year!
