While it may be true that the world view and mantra of management in the passing industrial age was ” I don’t pay you to think,” that’s the exact opposite of what’s needed today. But when you look out into your world, you can see that our economic circumstances have far out changed our ability to effectively manage people for optimum performance.
I think the reason is purely habit, the familiar, safe, and conditional thinking of “that’s how we always did it”. We love to hang on to our need for control and compliance, but we desperately need people who think for themselves, not afraid to take a risk, and take action right now.
The real challenge is in how to get this new behavior started when we have done such a great job managing from control. Most employees know so very well how to avoid risk, blame, responsibility, and the danger of reprimand. Their now powerlessness and institutionalized behavior stands as a testament to the management practices of the passing era. And that’s costing you money in lost productivity!
It’s a new world out there, calling to be met with new practices. A recent poll by Gallup shows the U.S. and Canada leading the world with only 29% of employees being engaged at work. That means 3 in 10 of your people are giving their best effort. Imagine what would happen in your company if you got that up to just 7 in 10?
